MAPUSA: Mapusa Urban Health Centre (UHC) Health Officer Dr Cheryl de Souza has fixed a joint site inspection of the Tar River, on Friday (July 16) after the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) took cognisance of a GOACAN letter with regards to the issues related to the river.

It may be recalled that GOACAN on the State Consumer Rights Day (June 25) in a letter had brought to the notice of the UHC Health Officer Mapusa the media reports on various health issues linked to the river.
The dead fish found in the river in March 2021 had created fear and anxiety among consumers and residents of Mapusa.
In the letter GOACAN had pointed out that water stagnation occurred due to the dumping of mud and debris into river, release of wastewater, dumping of garbage which led to health and sanitation issues.
The second deadly wave of pandemic has witnessed several deaths. At this juncture, it is important to assure the people that other health issues such as vector-borne diseases will not emerge due to the present condition of the river if prompt action is taken, the letter further stated.
The letter also pointed out that early intervention to solve a problem always helps to create confidence in the minds of the consumers and can go a long way to prevent litigation and the filing of complaints by using the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and other related legislation.
