PANJIM: The Goa government has finalised the name of retired High Court of Bombay Judge Justice Amabadas Joshi for the post of Goa Lokayukta.
The file recommending Justice Joshi’s name will now be sent to the approval of the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
The government had earlier shortlisted the name of retired High Court of Bombay Judge Justice U V Bakre to be the Goa Lokayukta but he withdrew his consent given to the government last month.
Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat is learnt to have given his consent to the appointment of Lokayukta while urging the government to make the Institution of Lokayukta strong and to empower it with authority and powers to act against illegalities and corruption.
Justice Joshi has also served as the chairman of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal, Mumbai from July 2014 to July 2019.
Social activist Adv Aires Rodrigues had approached the High Court of Bombay at Goa over the failure of the State government to fill the vacancy of the Goa Lokayukta.
In January this year, the Goa government amended the Goa Lokayukta Act which the opposition charged that it was done to make the institution a powerless chair.
