MARGAO: Journalist Gary Azavedo was beaten up by road side vendors on Tuesday night.
Accused Ramazan Mohidinsab Shurali, husband of vendor and the vendor Bibijan Akke both residents of khareband were arrested by Margao Police soon after the incident.
There are nearly 50 to 60 vendors sitting on the footpaths opposite the MMC selling kids clothes and other miscellaneous items. The reporter attempted to click photos of the vendors reportedly for a news item. Alerted by this the vendor Bibijan Akke started arguing with the reporter Gary and soon started manhandling him. The woman then called her husband Ramazan Mohidinsab Shurali who reached the spot soon. The accused husband of the vendor then went on to assault reporter Gary and also tore his clothes.
Gary then came to the police station and filed a complaint against the duo and the duo was subsequently arrested.
These vendors have been sitting here on the footpaths for years and have caused destruction to the plants and defaced the centre of the town. This is the first time such a confrontation has taken place.
Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginald Lourenco came to the Police station to enquire on the case.
