Journalist probing possible sand smuggling story threatened, 2 booked

Basuri Desai, who contributes news reports to O Heraldo from Canacona, was accosted by the two on Thursday midnight at the Pollem check post; Desai was conducting ground investigations on sand smuggling

CANACONA: Canacona police booked two persons for threatening senior journalist, Basuri Desai, who does news reports for O Heraldo,  on Thursday night, at the Pollem check post on Goa-Karnataka border.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Canacona), Tikam Singh Varma informed that Virendra Naik and Naresh alias Nandesh Naik were booked under Sections 341 (restraint), 509 (insulting modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code.

The duo reportedly tried to assault Basuri at the check post and it was only because the journalist remained in his car without opening the door or window, he survived from being assaulted. After escaping from the check post, he visited the Canacona police station to lodge his official complaint against the accused.

Basuri, who has filed reports on the various illegalities going on at the Pollem check post, including alcohol smuggling and allowing a free entry for vehicles without check them, had gone to investigate sand smuggling  at this check post.

DySP Varma said that if the two accused do not co-operate with the investigations, they will be placed under arrest.
