PANJIM: The JSW Steel has moved Bombay High Court at Goa challenging the show cause notice issued to it by the State government over the non-payment of Rs 156.34 crore of cess on coal transportation.
The show cause notice was issued on September 29. In a fresh move, the Assistant Director Transport, South Goa, had recently issued a ‘Demand Notice’ to the firm to pay the cess within 15 days.
The JSW in a statement issued has said that it has filed a Writ Petition before the Bombay HC challenging the show cause notice issued for non-payment of cess to the extent of Rs 156.34 crore.
It has also challenged the applicability of the Goa Rural Improvement and Welfare Cess Act, 2000 on goods transported by rail.
It said that the case came up for admission on October 22 and was heard on the preliminary issues.
“JSW defended the challenge on maintainability of the petition by stating that the Constitutional vires of the Act being challenged in the instant case, which did not require the issuance of any particular notice,” the statement reads.
The case has now been posted for further hearing on November 26.
