July likely to maintain three-year status of being wettest month

PANJIM: July closing in on becoming the wettest month for the third consecutive year as 34 inches of rain is recorded in just ten days. 

As incessant rains continue to lash Goa for more than a week now, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 34 inches of rainfall from July 12 to 22, which is almost equal to the total amount of rain in June. 

The month has so far recorded 42 inches (1065.2mm) of rains which slightly above the average normal rainfall of 41 inches for the entire month. IMD Goa states that there are indications by numerical weather prediction models that there could be reduction in rainfall activity from around July 25. 

As per the data available from IMD in 2020, from July 1 to July 31, Goa received 51.12 inches (1252.6mm) of rains while in 2019, July recorded total 53.68 inches (1315.4mm) of rainfall. 

Formation of various systems like low pressure area, cyclonic circulation, trough, etc led to continuous heavy showers from July 12. IMD Goa said that the Orange alert will remain in force till July 24.

So far in the current month, July 7 recorded the lowest 5.1mm of rainfall while the highest was on July 19, when the State 132.9 mm of rains. July 19 is also the wettest day of the season so far. June had recorded 34 inches of rains. 

Since June 1, Goa has recorded almost 80 inches (2018.5mm) of rains as against the average normal of 65.03 inches (1652mm). The coastal State has so far received 22 per cent of the excess rains.
