June deficiency cleared; Goa records eight inches of rainfall in 24 hours

PANJIM: Goa recorded nearly eight inches of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am Thursday, swinging from being rain deficient to rain surplus this month. 

After a rain-deficit June, the coastal State has an excess of 6 per cent rainfall as on date. 

The persistent wet spell, which prevailed across the State in the last few days, has helped in clearing off the rain deficiency which was over 28 per cent by end of June. As on date, the State has recorded 46.92 inches of rainfall (1192.1mm) as against the normal average of 44.35 inches (1126.7mm) of rainfall. 

The month also recorded the second wettest day of the season- July 6 which recorded 133.6mm of rainfall. So far, June 28 is the wettest with 142.5mm of showers. 

For the second consecutive day on Thursday, the State was put on red alert following the occurrence of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the State. Orange colour warning has been issued for Friday. 

Except two rain gauge stations, – Sanquelim and Valpoi – all the stations received abundant rainfall, that is more than 1,00mm till morning. Canacona station recorded the highest 168.3mm of rain, followed by Panjim 158.3mm and Sanguem 155.5mm. Margao and Mormugao recorded 140mm of rainfall, respectively.
