June ends with 28.3 p.c. deficit despite rain bringing pain

PANJIM: For the second year in a row, the very first month of the monsoon season-June-ended with deficit rains, even as very heavy showers continued to cause havoc in the State in last few days. The month ended with 28.3 per cent less rains. 

The month which witnessed no rainfall activities till June 9, recorded total 655mm (25.7 inches) of rains as against the normal average of 914mm (35.9inches). June 28 turned out to be the wettest of the season so far with 142.5mm of rainfall. 

The monsoon onset over Goa was delayed by five days and it reached only on June 10. 

Last year, June ended with nine percent deficit rains. The month had recorded total 830.2mm (32.68 inches) of rainfall as against the normal average of 914.2 mm (36 inches). 

Before that it was in 2019, when the month had recorded 14 per cent deficit showers compared to normal average. 

The year 2020 and 2021, June had reported surplus rains. In 2021, the month had witnessed six percent excess rainfall while in 2020; it was 16 per cent excess. 

The IMD Goa official said that a single month’s deficiency may not be taken to judge the whole season’s performance. Official also said that the seasonal deficit for June which was initially over 70 per cent reduced subsequently and ended the month with only 28 per cent shortfall. 

“The monsoon currents had weakened over the coast in the initial phase. The conditions have now become favourable for excess rains,” official said. 

After a weakened monsoon period, the State has been witnessing heavy showers over last couple of days. In the last 24 hours, the monsoon activities have become stronger, with the IMD putting the State on Yellow Colouralert. 

The IMD has further said that rainfall activities are likely to be in excess during the first and second week of July till July 13 for the State.
