Junior technician quizzed in body disposal case

PANJIM: A day after the forensic head of Goa Medical College, Dr Edmund Rodrigues, was questioned in connection with the illegal disposal of a body, Crime Branch (CB) on Thursday questioned the department’s junior technician Machindra Jhalmi for about an hour.
“He was quizzed for one hour. If required, the investigation team might summon him for questioning again,” an officer said. During the latter half of the day, CB also recorded the statement of a police constable in whose presence the body of Januz Gonsalves was handed over by GMC to the Corporation of City of Panaji for disposal along with three unclaimed bodies. The constable will be treated as a witness in the case, the officer stated.
On September 23, Januz collapsed on the ground while playing football and subsequently died. His body was preserved at the GMC morgue as police had insisted for a post-mortem, but the body went missing thereafter as GMC had handed it over for disposal along with three other unclaimed bodies. The government has suspended Rodrigues, Jalmi and post mortem attendant Prakash Narvekar and requested a CB probe.
Rodrigues’ anticipatory bail plea will be heard on Friday. CB is likely to object to the plea. Narvekar will be questioned on Friday.
