VASCO: The Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida said the dilapidated government-owned Junta Quarters building at Bhuteabhat in Baina would be demolished and a new building with about 400 residential flats for government staffers would be constructed.
He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the Junta Quarters along with PWD officials and Municipal Council officials to find out a permanent solution on how to curb the menace of overflowing sewage located inside the compound wall of Junta Quarters.
The inspection was held following Herald’s report where farmers from Mestawada had complained about contamination of their agricultural fields due to discharge of sewage from Junta Quarters.
“After inspecting Junta Quarters at Baina, it is learnt that the building which was constructed some three decades ago is in a dilapidated condition. Despite repairs by the PWD, certain issues like overflowing of sewage could not be resolved as the existing sewerage line connected to the Junta Quarters is at higher level while the building which was built on a low lying area is at lower level. Therefore, as a long term solution we have decided to demolish these old residential buildings and to build a new building with about 400 flats for different government employees having different grades,” Almeida said.
He alleged that the trenchless sewerage line laid by sewerage and infrastructural development corporation of Goa Ltd is defective and improper.
“The overflowing of sewage from Junta Quarters was due to the failure of pumps at the sewerage pumping stations since the last couple of days. Similarly my inquiry revealed that the SIDCGL which was assigned to replace the old existing sewage lines has not done their work properly due to which there are blockages inside the line and at the pumping stations. There is need of upgrading three pumping stations at Baina” he said and added that “Also as this issue of overflowing sewage from chambers is serious, I have convened a special meeting with the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate Mormugao on Friday to review the works undertaken by SIDCGL and to discuss the issue of overflowing of sewage at Junta Quarters.
