PANJIM: Old Goa Police have registered an FIR against the contractor of the Old Goa-Panjim corridor and 15 others for restraining the entry and threatening social activist Sudip Tamhankar and his wife while on their way home.
Tamhankar in his complaint said he was on his way home and due to the digging work at Kadamba Plateau stopped his two-wheeler and questioned why there was no proper signage and information board. Suddenly about 15 people gathered around him, snatched his two-wheeler key and the JCB at the spot was brought towards him.
After escaping from the spot, Tamhankar with the help of another commuter went to Old Goa Police Station and he and his wife lodged two separate complaints.
“Police didn’t do anything on receiving the complaint and only after I pursued the matter with North Goa SP Umesh Gaonkar, Old Goa Police registered the FIR,” Tamhankar said.
He said he has identified the person who threatened him and snatched the key, but Old Goa Police have failed to initiate action against the person. “Old Goa police are hand-in-glove with the contractor and I have appealed to Goa Police to hand over this case to some other officers for fair investigation” Tamhankar said.
Old Goa Police Inspector Krishna Sinari said the investigation is in progress.
Tamhankar in the past has filed complaints against the contractor with various government agencies for not carrying out construction work as per conditions laid down by PWD and other authorities.
Goa State Pollution Control Board had also issued notices to the contractor for violating the board’s norms.
