Kala Academy, Goa’s iconic cultural hub, faces significant structural challenges, warns a recent inspection led by IIT Madras. The expert team, including civil engineering professors and PWD officials, conducted a thorough visual inspection and recommended an extensive structural overhaul based on observed corrosion risks and water damage. The foundation steel beneath the auditorium is exposed to saline conditions, causing corrosion concerns. IIT Madras emphasized avoiding micro-concrete for external repairs due to its poor durability in Goa’s humid climate.
The team suggested detailed condition assessments with infrared scanning to detect hidden dampness and water damage, coupled with redesigning drainage to connect directly to floor traps. They also recommended sloped terrace coping to prevent water stagnation and plaster cracking. To combat corrosion, researchers proposed injecting zinc or galvanic anodes to protect steel reinforcements from further deterioration.
A concerning delay in response from the Public Works Department (PWD) was highlighted, with task force member Francis Coelho criticizing bureaucratic lapses that stalled timely expert inspections. Despite these hurdles, IIT Madras plans intervention based on analytical studies of structural samples, prioritizing repairs to preserve the architectural integrity of the revered venue designed by Charles Correa.
The Kala Academy has also faced recent renovation issues such as roof leaks and false ceiling collapses, prompting additional safety concerns. Goa’s government has faced scrutiny for delayed actions and tendering irregularities in renovation contracts. The High Court of Bombay at Goa has urged vigilant oversight to ensure quality restoration in line with defect liability provisions.
