Kalay-Curchorem rly double-track greenlit after successful trial run

MARGAO:  After a successful speed trial run was conducted on the newly laid second track of the Kalay-Curchorem (Sanvordem) segment of the South Western Railway (SWR) by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), this new double-tracked Kalay-Curchorem (Sanvordem) section has become operational.

This section forms part of the Hospet-Hubli-Tinaighat-Vasco double-tracking project.

According to a senior railway official, the train achieved a speed of 100 kmph during the trial. Following the inspection, CRS approved a sectional speed of 80 kmph on the Kalay-Curchorem section, as per sources.

This also marks the second partial double line stretch to be commissioned in Goa.

The SWR had earlier inaugurated the 15.2 km double-tracked Margao-Chandor-Sanvordem section on October 10, 2021, marking the first functional stretch along the Hospet-Hubli-Tinaighat-Vasco doubling-tracking project in Goa. During the speed trial of Margao-Chandor-Sanvordem conducted in Sep 2021, the train reached a speed of 124 kmph, leading to the approval for the opening of commercial services on the newly-built double line section.

The commissioning of the Kalay-Curchorem double line is expected to enhance train mobility by eliminating the need for trains to wait at crossings, according to railway officials. Additionally, recent infrastructure developments, including an underpass at Dhadem in Sanvordem and road overbridges at Kalay and Sanvordem, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, further contributed to the project’s progress.

It may be recalled that the Supreme Court (SC) appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) had recommended the cancellation of SWR’s much-opposed double-tracking project from Tinaighat (Karnataka) to Goa.
