Tension escalated in Karapur as residents intensified their protest against alleged inaction by the panchayat over a controversial mega project. Villagers marched to the panchayat office seeking clarity on the project’s status and a stop-work notice, only to find the premises deserted with no elected members or secretary present.
Agitated by the absence of officials, protesters staged a sit-in at the entrance and raised slogans against both the project and the local body. Residents alleged negligence, claiming authorities failed to respond despite over a month of sustained agitation. Some also accused panchayat members of being aligned with the builder lobby.
Villagers pointed out that a gram sabha had passed a resolution to issue a show-cause notice, but no action had followed. Concerns were also raised over the lack of accountability after the sarpanch’s resignation, with repeated attempts to meet officials proving unsuccessful.
Protesters, including senior citizens, expressed disappointment over elected representatives not supporting the community. They warned that the agitation, now in its 31st day, would continue until their demands are addressed.
