Karapur-Sarvan residents up in arms against mega project in Bicholim

A real estate developer has proposed to develop 1,700 plots; being promoted exclusively for non-Goans at Goa Property Expo scheduled on the weekend

PANJIM: Activists and residents of Karapur-Sarvan in Bicholim have flayed the Goa Property expo scheduled at Gurugram and Noida on June 15 and 16.

The residents of Karapur-Sarvan are up in arms against the mega project where 1,700 plots are to be developed on lakhs of square metres of land inthe village of Karapur.

Activist SwpaneshSherlekar alleged that the property is developed in connivance with the government. “There is no planning and the real estate are planning for the State in connivance with the government, which is disastrous for the State and its people,” he said.

Rohan Savaikar said, “What is going on in Karapuris wrong. There are about 1,000 houses. There will be pressure on existing infrastructure. PWD has already said that it cannot supply water. The government says that it will not convert the agricultural land but it is doing just the opposite.”

Adv Ajay Prabhugaonkarpointed out that the kind of development they are projecting in the village, the Karapur village will be like Dhargalim village. “We all can see what is going on in Dhargalim. God knows from whom this is being done. The project is being developed at the cost of Goans. Now I do not think any land will be available in the State. This should not be allowed. It will put pressure on infrastructure. People of Karapur know the implications of the project. Do we have an ecosystem to support 1,700 plots?” he questioned.

DayanandSawant said, “We oppose the project because it will create pressure on the existing infrastructure like water and electricity supply.”

When contacted, Karapur-SarvansarpanchTanviSawant said, “We have only given provisional permission to the land owner to develop the plot. The issue will be discussed during the gram sabha meeting to be convened this month.
