Karnataka Government Mulls ₹5 Lakh Compensation for Dog Bite Deaths; High Court Directs Comprehensive Awareness Plan

The Karnataka government has informed the High Court that discussions have taken place regarding the payment of compensation in cases of dog bite incidents. In a meeting convened by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, it was proposed that a compensation of ₹5 lakh be provided to the families of individuals who succumb to injuries caused by dog bites. Additionally, a compensation amount of ₹5,000 for those suffering injuries from such incidents was also considered.

In response to a public interest litigation on the implementation of the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001, the High Court directed the government to widely publicize guidelines related to feeding street animals and conflict resolution. The court recommended dissemination through official websites, pamphlets, TV announcements, and cinema halls to ensure effective awareness among the public.

The court had previously directed the state to address the issue of stray dogs and the implementation of guidelines set by the Animal Welfare Board of India. During a hearing on October 5, concerns were raised about feeding animals in areas posing risks to school children. The government informed the court that a meeting with stakeholders was held on October 6, and the High Court granted four more weeks for another comprehensive meeting, adjourning the case by six weeks. The Animal Welfare Board of India’s guidelines on Pet and Street/Stray Dogs were issued in 2015.
