MARGAO: The Leader of Opposition Babu Kavlekar and his brother Babal Kavlekar were both granted anticipatory bail by the Principal Sessions Judge B P Deshpande on Friday. Both have also been directed to report to the police station as and when called and also cooperate with the investigations and not tamper with the evidence.
While Babu Kavlekar was granted bail on a bond of Rs 50,000, his brother has to post bail bond of Rs 20,000. Both have also been directed to furnish one solvent surety of the same amount.
It may be recalled that the State had sought custodial interrogation of both the brothers primarily to trace the matka operators from outside the State.
However, the defence asserted that custodial interrogation was not required as both were cooperating with the investigating authorities and the lapses exposed by the defence lawyers had compelled the judge to ask some hard hitting questions to the public prosecutor at the last hearing when arguments were heard.
