PONDA: The gram sabha of Kavlem Village Panchayat held on Sunday turned stormy over garbage management issue.

Opposing the proposed composting unit near panchayat office, the locals rejected the same pointing out that it is a residential area and further claimed that the stench smell will emanate from the same.

“We will not allow to dump garbage collected from entire area at panchayat office and if need arises we will approach court”, the locals claimed.

Replying to the opposition by the locals, Sarpanch Rajesh Kavlekar said that the village panchayat had no other alternative but to set up the proposed composting unit near panchayat office.

“As per court directives the panchayat has to set up its own garbage composting unit. The composting unit has to be set up until the problem is solved on permanent basis.  The villagers should cooperate”, he said.

He further proposed that if any local is willing to provide land for setting up the same the panchayat is ready to shift its composting unit.

One local Deepak Shikerkar showed his willingness to provide 1000 square metres of his plot at Dhangarwada but was rejected as the area was located on hill and there was no access to vehicle.
