PONDA: The villagers of Kavlem has urged the WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar to protect perennial water bodies at Kavlem that never dry up. But these water bodies are on verge of extinct due to dumping of waste and garbage. The villagers said if there is no tap water, people go to the spring and get their water for drinking and other purpose.
The villagers led by local panch member Yogesh Kavlekar stressed the need to protect water bodies and springs at Kavlem that provides water for almost 12 months of the year. The locals are worried as some people dump garbage and debris causing pollution and blocking water flow.
Seventy two year old Pandari Naik said he never saw this spring ever dry up and people use the water for all purposes, stressing the need to protect it.
The locals said when Karnataka had diverted Mhadei water it would create water shortage and so there is need to protect water bodies at Kavlem which are flowing with good flow of water and can tide up incase of tap water shortage.
The local women narrated how for many decades even before tap water supply came to the village they were using water from springs at Gautan Betalwada Kavlem and it was also famous spot for bathing, washing clothes as well as people used water for drinking purpose. The villagers said several families use water for drinking incase there is water supply shortage from Opa water works. The locals said the spring at Kavlem has medicinal value and that recently it was cleaned by panchayat and locals.
