‘Kayaking is possible if nullahs, rivulets in coastal areas are desilted’

CALANGUTE: Youth in the coastal villages will be able to start kayaking facilities if nullahs and rivulets are desilted and made navigable, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has said.

While launching the desilting work of a nullah at Lingabhat, Parra, he said, “The entire rivulet is blocked due to silt from the nearby fields, overgrown trees and bushes, which has affected the smooth flow of water. As the rivulet is also a breeding ground of fish and crabs a need was felt to desilt the rivulet and to rejuvenate it. The local youth could also start kayaking boating business once it is desilted and made clean.”

The work of the desilting of the rivulet is being undertaken on a small stretch from Lingabhat in Parra to Nagoa. The rivulet connects to the Arpora-Bagariver.

“The Arpora-Nagoa sarpanch has already helped some youth start kayaking activities at Baga-Arpora, and once the rivulet is clean, we can also start it here, in Nagoa-Parra. The youth can get self-employed,” he said, while adding that “the government can provide with loans to start such businesses to cater to tourists.”
