SANGUEM: Dhendlo festival where cattle is worshipped was celebrated with much fervour by the youth of Sanvordem.
This festival is generally celebrated on the next day after Laxmi Puja where Goddess of Wealth is worshiped.
At Sanvordem it was quite a sight to see a large number of youngsters carrying the devaro or the wooden receptacle in which an idol of Lord Krishna is placed. They went door to door in the village singing ‘Dhe Dhendlo, Dhendlya Paus Shendlyo’.
This festival is also called Gorvancho Padvo or festival of cattle, as Lord Krishna is considered to be the guardian of cowherds.
The celebration begins with worship of the cow religiously and vermillion or kumkum is put on it’s forehead before garlanding it.
At Sanvordem, the devaro was first placed near the tulsi plant and later taken door to door to beating of drums and clinking of the cymbals.
At every household, the house owners welcomed them by offering flowers and any organic produce like rice or coconut.
“We organised this festival to keep alive our tradition so that it will not be forgotten,” said Uday Deikar, one of the youngster who took the initiative to organise it this year.
The celebration ended with the Dhendlo taken to the local temple where another religious ceremony was held.
