Kerala Biodiversity Board interacts with Biodiversity Committees of Shristal, Bandora

Shristal Biodiversity Management Committee appreciated for recording old traditions and local language

CANACONA/PONDA: The delegation of Kerala State Biodiversity Board interacted with the Canacona Biodiversity Management Committee, at Shristhal, as part of a learning program on Friday. Ealier, on Thursday  they interacted with members of Bandora Bio-diversity Board.

A delegation headed by Dr V Balakrishnan, Member Secretary of Kerala State Biodiversity Board along with Board Members Dr C S Vimalkumar, Dr K T Chandramohanan and K V Govindan and Varsha Hoble as a mentor from Goa State Biodiversity Board discussed with traditional healers locally known as Vakhdalis at Gulem and interacted with BMC as well as panchayat members about the functioning of BMC. Thereafter the team participated in the Peoples Biodiversity Register (PBR) presentation and appreciated the work of BMC, especially for recording the old traditions and words in the local language.

BMC member Shirish Pai briefed about the functioning of BMC and gave a presentation of PBR. 

BMC Member Anjali Gaonkar, Chanda Desai, and Govind Velip along with Sub Committee member Tejas Naik Gaonkar, Rajay Bhandari, Satish Gosavi, and Dipak Bowalkar as  co-ordinator for TSG also participated in the discussion along with Sarpanch Sejal Gaonkar, Panchayat  Member  Akshada Velip, Ganesh Gaonkar, Livia Naik  and ex Panch Sanju Naik. 

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Kerala State Biodiversity Board visited Bandora and met Chairman Adv Surel Tilve and committee members of Bandora Bio-diversity Board. They exchanged ideas for improvement of biodiversity. 

Later at a press briefing Adv Surel Tilve said that Kerala Bio-Diversity members were interested how the seed bank operated at Bandora. They provided inputs for improvement of our seed board. He said, “We are now planning to organize a seed festival where people will bring seeds and exchange them. The Kerala Biodiversity members suggested to us to promote seed school, wherein students will come and sow seed to grow plants. Various ideas were exchanged.”

Adv Surel Tilve informed them about various 52 kinds of seed available with them.
