MARGAO: Railway Protection Force of Konkan Railway arrested a Kerala native and recovered gold and other valuables worth Rs 2.2 lakh from him, which he had allegedly stolen from AC 2 coach from a woman passenger.
On November 13, 2020, passenger Vonita Diwakar Shetty reported that her hand bag was stolen from Berth Nos 8 & 10 in Coach No A1 of Train No 02617 of Mangala Express while travelling from Udupi to Mumbai. The bag contained a gold bangle, gold mangalsutra, mobile, key bunch, Aadhaar Card, ATM card, Mediclaim card, purse with Rs 6,000 all valued Rs 2.2 lakh. She informed the on duty TTE and lodged a complaint.
On receiving information, Inspector Crime and Intelligence RPF/Margao Vinod Kumar analysed the CCTV and noticed the suspected person at the train time on the platform was wearing a coloured cap. The photo of the person was circulated in WhatsApp RPF group and on November 14, the suspect was apprehended while wearing same cap by on duty Karwar staff constable Vinayak R D and train escorting duty staff of Margao from general coach of Train No 06345 Netravati Express at Karwar station. The stolen items including gold were recovered. The train was halted for crossing. He was returning to his native place with the stolen items. The accused Nikhil Kumar, resident of Kannur, Kerala was brought from Karwar and was handed over to Konkan Railway Police who filed a case vide Crime No 14/2020 under Section 379 of IPC.
