PONDA: Refusing to attend a closed-door meeting with Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) over the Keriyem garbage treatment facility, Curti-Khandepar Panchayat has, instead, asked the council to hold a joint site inspection along with villagers.
It may be recalled that villagers from the panchayat area are up in arms against PMC’s garbage treatment facility being developed at PMC’s site at Keriyem in Curti-Khandepar Panchayat.
“PMC wanted us to attend a meeting with PMC councillors to discuss the issue related to the garbage treatment facility at Keriyem. However, instead of meeting with the PMC, the panchas want to conduct joint inspection along with locals. We have conveyed our decision to PMC,” said Curti-Khandepar Sarpanch Deepa Naik.
PMC recently after constructing a shed at the site used it to dry manure generated from the organic waste convertors (OWC) which are in operation in the city. However, the villagers claim that due to manure, there was sudden influx of flies. Fearing disease outbreak, villagers demanded that PMC must immediately stop using the area for the purpose. Villagers recently held a protest at the site and even the gram sabha was adjournment over the issue.
