Khabrastan row: MMC councillors allege false submission to HC

MARGAO: A faction of councillors from the Margao Municipal Council have alleged that the legal advisor of the civic body has made a deceitful submission about the issue of the khabrastan (graveyard) at Sonsoddo, before the High Court of Bombay at Goa.

At the ordinary meeting held on Monday, Councillor Ghanashyam Shirodkar and a few others said that the land earmarked at Sonsoddo was not suitable for a khabrastan and demanded action against those involved in telling lies to the HC. Councillor Mahesh Amonkar also opposed the establishment of a khabrastan at the new site at Khareband.

The issue regarding the setting up of a burial ground for the Muslim community has been mired in controversy for the past several years.

“There was no meeting held on November 5, 2021, to deliberate on the issue,” Shirodkar alleged.

MMC Chief Officer Rohit Kadam clarified to the council that the meeting had been called on the mentioned date and that municipal administration and others had attended the meeting.

Some councillors also called for action against the previous Chief Officer for the false submission in the High Court.

Councillors from the Goa Forward Party and BJP reiterated that the site at Sonsoddo is not suitable for the khabrastan.
