VASCO: Saifullha Khan was on Tuesday elected as vice chairperson of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).
It may be recalled that in the 20-member council, Councillor Rajesh Redkar was disqualified for reportedly holding the office of profit.
Of the 19 councillors, Councillor Jerry Fernandes from the opposition group and Saifullha Khan from the ruling had filed nomination papers for the post of vice-chairperson. Presiding Officer, Mormugao Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankwalkar, who conducted the proceedings of the elections gave 15 minutes for withdrawal. However, when neither Fernendes nor Khan showed any signs of withdrawing from the fray, Shankwalkar conducted the election by way of secret ballot.
Shankwalkar informed that Fernandes polled five votes, while Khan polled 14 and Khan was declared elected as vice chairperson of MMC.
Speaking to media, Khan said he will take all the councillors into confidence before taking any decision of development work and his priority is to tackle the mounting garbage at the garbage dumping site at Headland Sada.
It may be recalled that the chairperson would hold the post for one year, while the vice chairperson for six months. The post of vice chairperson fell vacant on October 30 after Shekar Khadapkar resigned from the post as per the understanding after serving six months.
