PONDA: Suspecting that Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) would indiscriminately dump garbage at its site at Keryem in Curti-Khandepar Panchayat, residents from Keryem have requested the panchayat to monitor PMC’s activity.
According to information, the residents claimed that PMC dumped truck loads of manure (generated from organic waste composting machines) on Thursday and feared that PMC will start dumping untreated waste indiscriminately at the site.
Residents further claimed that since Thursday there was foul smell emanating from the dumped manure which compelled them to write to the panchayat informing about the incident.
On Friday following the complaint from residents, Curti-Khandepar panchayat members visited the site at Keryem but had to return as the entry gates to PMC’s garbage disposal site were locked.
“PMC must take Curti-Khandepar Panchayat into confidence before starting anything related to the garbage disposal. There is a fear among public that PMC will dump garbage indiscriminately in the land. The panchayat members will meet PMC Chairperson Dr Radhika Naik to discuss the issue,” said Curti-Khandepar Sarpanch Deepa Naik.
According to sources, PMC has undertaken work to construct sheds at its site in Keryem to dry manure generated from Organic Waste Convertor (OWC) machines which are installed in the city. There are five such machines and on an average about 4 tonnes of waste is treated in these machines in a scientific manner, daily.
