VASCO: Wholesale fish sellers from Khariwado, Vasco kept their outlets closed on Wednesday following a notice from Mormugao Municipality directing them to stop sale of fish from their outlets.
Mormugao Municipal Council Chief Officer had issued a notice to stop fish sale to wholesalers on Monday. The entire issue of stopping wholesale selling of fish came up when the fish vendors from Vasco fish market demanded that they will shift to new temporary shed only when the wholesale fish selling is stopped.
When contacted, MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar said that notices were issued to wholesalers to stop selling fish in their outlets on Nov 8.
Some sellers from Vasco fish market were given vendors cards on Monday.
Custodio D’souza, a fisherman from Khariwado, said that fish should be only sold in fish market as they have dedicated fish market and not illegally outside. He said that few days ago they were assured by MMC that they will build fish market complex and won’t allow wholesale fish selling in municipal area.
MMC councillor Vinod Kinlekar stated that new fish market will have better facilities and hygiene will be maintained. He also said that having a new fish market will benefit fish vendors.
