PORVORIM: Unhappy that he is yet to receive a reply from the North Goa magistrate regarding his decision to declare the entire stretch of NH-17 from Betim (Malim) circle to O’Coqueiro as a no-parking zone, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has now decided to raise the issue in the forthcoming assembly.
It may be recalled that North Goa District Magistrate R Mihir Vardhan had issued a notification on December 31, 2013, declaring the entire stretch of NH-17 from Betim (Malim) circle to O’Coqueiro on both the sides as ‘No parking Zone’ for all types of vehicles. He had also authorized the departments concerned to erect traffic signboards in order to regulate the motor vehicle traffic.
The notification has caused panic among business establishments, with many shopkeepers and hoteliers worried that the ‘no-parking’ zone could have an adverse effect on their businesses. They then approached Porvorim MLA with their grievance that if this notification were to be implemented, their business activities would come to a standstill.
“Even though I sent a letter to the district magistrate in this connection, the district magistrate has not replied to me as yet. The issue of no-parking along the declared stretch of the highway has been decided in a haphazard manner by the State government and I was not apprised about the issue. The notification issued does not have clarity and as such has created confusion in the minds of the residents in the constituency. I will raise this issue in the forthcoming assembly session,” said Khaunte.
