PANJIM: The Khazan Action Committee (KAC) has demanded that the authorities issue orders to lock the sluice gates in the Neura, Mandur-Azossim and Carambolim area as fishing nets are being cast illegally.
The Tiswadi Mamlatdar recently cancelled the auction to lease the sluice gate fishing operations in the areas following the complaints of violations.
“The lease operators who were operating the sluice gate in 2017 are illegally casting nets at the sluice gate and are also threatening farmers and villagers. They are being supported by office- bearers of the tenant association,” KAC Convenor Ramrao Wagh said.
He added that the illegal activities will lead to a ‘riot-like situation’ as different groups are vying to operate sluice gates by bribing the tenant associations.
“KAC demands that the tenant associations lock the sluice gates until the onset of the monsoon by closing the doors using the traditional technique that is followed by associations when auctions are not being held,” Wagh said.
KAC further demanded that the local police station assist and maintain round the clock bandobast to stop illegal fishing activities as this can lead to a law and order problem.
A memorandum has been submitted to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte, North Goa Collector, Tiswadi Mamlatdar and Agassaim Police Station.
