Kolhapur woman among three held for selling one-year-old daughter for Rs 1 lakh to Goa couple

Accused identified as Poonam Dhenge (25) – infant's mother, Sachin Kondekar (40) from Shahapur & Kiran Patil (30); Agasaim couple Fatima Fernandes and Jerry Paul Noronha too implicated

PANJIM:  A woman hailing from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, embroiled in a family dispute with her husband, took a drastic step by selling her one-year-old daughter to a couple in Goa for Rs 1 lakh. 

The child’s father, lodged a complaint with the local police in the early hours of Wednesday, prompting swift action from law enforcement. Subsequently, a case was registered against five individuals allegedly involved in the despicable transaction.

The accused have been identified as Poonam Dilip Dhenge (25), the mother of the infant, her accomplice Sachin Annappa Kondekar (40) from Shahapur, and Kiran Ganapathi Patil (30), suspected to have facilitated the sale. Additionally, the Goa-based couple, Fatima Fernandes and Jerry Paul Noronha, who purportedly purchased the child, were also implicated in the case. Kolhapur police stated that the couple is from Agasaim, Tiswadi taluka. 

Promptly responding to the complaint, the Kolhapur Police conducted a thorough investigation, leading to the arrest of the woman, her friend, and the intermediary allegedly involved in orchestrating the transaction. Panjim DySP Sudesh Naik stated that Kolhapur Police came to Goa and tried to trace the couple in Agasaim but were unsuccessful. They subsequently found the cellphone location of the couple in Pernem. 

When contacted, Pernem Police stated that they had not been intimated about the case by Kolhapur police.
