Konkan Fruit Fest to lay special emphasis on jackfruit

Goa's "Ponos and Patponos" will figure prominently at the decade-old Konkan Fruit Fest 2013 organized by the Botanical Society of Goa which has moved to South Goa this year.

MARGAO: Goa’s “Ponos and Patponos” will figure prominently at the decade-old Konkan Fruit Fest 2013 organized by the Botanical Society of Goa which has moved to South Goa this year.

The four-day celebrations will be held on the sprawling BPS Club Grounds from May 9-12 will lay special focus on the jackfruit and its commercial exploitation for export.

The BPS Club is the festival partner, while the ICAR-Goa and KVK-North, the Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeet, Dapoli and Directorate of Agriculture, Panjim are participating along with the Goa Food and Drugs Administration, besides other departments.

Addressing the media, Botanical Society of Goa Secretary Miguel Braganza said that fruits for the competition must reach the venue by 3 pm on Thursday. 

Entries will be judged the same day and the results will be declared the next day, he said, adding there will also be entertainment and on-the-spot competitions in fruit eating and fruit carving.

He said the fruit fest will be open to the public after the inauguration till 7 pm. 

“There will be a competition for processed fruit products (pickle, candy, jam, syrup, cake and wine) on Friday.

Stalls are available for sale of fruits and fruit products or plants and equipments used for fruit cultivation or processing.
