MARGAO: Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, on Friday, said that the electrification of the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd’s route will be completed within a year.
“The State government is working towards making Goa a pollution-free State. Railways will contribute in its own way by electrifying the Konkan Railway line,” said the Railways Minister.
Speaking to the media in the commercial capital of Goa, Goyal said that the electrification of the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd’s route will help curb pollution as diesel engines will not be used on this line.
Once the line is electrified diesel-run trains will no longer run on the route, the minister added.
The minister also said that in the near future new areas in Goa will be connected by railway line. This will help Goans in travelling he added.
Keeping in mind that Goa has suffered on tourism this year due to various reasons Goyal said that more “quality trains will be started for tourists’ benefit.
“Tourists, both national and international can enjoy the beauty of Goa while they travel by train. We are also introducing more vista-dome coaches (coaches with glass dome on the top) on the route,” he added.
The KRCL manages the railway line between Roha in Maharashtra and Thokur in Karnataka, covering a distance of 743 km.
