PERNEM: The Korgao Panchayat started a cleanliness drive at Pethechawada on Wednesday to fight against the growing menace of garbage and create awareness among the people.
The panchas joined hands against the nusiance and stated that the panchayat would take strict action against those who litter the village and warned tourists that they would be taken to task if they dump garbage by the roadside
Leading by example, the Korgao panchayat members cleaned the Pethechawada roadside, which was littered with household garbage, liquor bottles and plastic waste dumped by tourists also.
“Even though there is door-to-door collection of garbage, villagers still dump garbage by the roadside under the cover of darkness. This has become a routine habit,” said the panchas.
The panchas stated that not only the villagers but even tourists have also contributed a major part in destroying the beauty of the village.
“Korgaon mainly consists of poor villagers and despite the fact that the panchayat has workers to collect garbage, people dump it at night by the roadside. It is necessary to stop dumping household waste by the roadside. The increasing alcohol waste dumped by tourists will have a serious impact on the children as there is a school nearby. People need to think about it. If everyone behaves responsibly, such situations will not arise.” said Kalpita Kalshavkar Dy Sarpanch Korgao Panchayat
As garbage is dumped by the roadside, animals are attracted to this place and there is a high probability of accidents occurring. In order to curb this menace, the Korgao panchayat held the drive to spread awareness among the Korgao public.
