CANACONA: Still struggling to tackle garbage problem in the municipality, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has now been hit by a notice from the Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) demanding a whopping Rs 55 lakh from the CMC for having dumped garbage in railway property.
According to CMC sources, the KRC had sent a notice to the CMC a few days ago demanding Rs 55 lakh as damage for having destroyed its land by dumping garbage across the Konkan Railway tracks at Gulem-Canacona.
Enclosing pictures showing the garbage dumps, KRC authorities claimed that their land of about 1,500 sq mtrs across the railway tracks at Gulem had been destroyed due to the garbage dumps.
Since its land had become unusable, the KRC has asked the CMC to pay the market value for the land, which worked out to Rs 55 lakh.
This issue was raised in the CMC’s monthly meeting on Tuesday; however, the council was inconclusive in its decision and instead, asked the administration to respond to the demands of the KRC.
Confirming that they were in receipt of the KRC letter, CMC Chairperson Mahadev Dessai, however, insisted that the practice of dumping garbage across the KRC tracks at Gulem had been prevalent before he had taken over as chairperson.
It may be recalled that the CMC was accused for indiscriminately dumping garbage across the KRC tracks at Gulem, even after the Rs 1 crore garbage treatment plant was commissioned at Dumane.
Interestingly, CMC is still accused of emptying its compactors across a road bypass between Devabhag and Gulem, polluting the atmosphere just across a canal.
