MARGAO: The government of Karnataka has once again stirred concerns in Goa by sending a letter requesting permission for the diversion of the Mhadei river, prompting preparations for renewed agitation to protect the lifeline of Goa.
Addressing a gathering at Lohia Maidan, historian Prajal Sakhardande raised concerns over Karnataka’s renewed efforts, allegedly backed by the Central government, to proceed with the diversion of the Mhadei waters. “They are only waiting for the environment clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forest. And there are chances that the Ministry may approve the request keeping in mind the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” he said.
Warning of dire consequences, Sakhardande stressed that granting permission for diversion would spell disaster for the Mhadei river. The letter submitted by the Karnataka government reportedly indicates their intent to construct a jackkwell, indicating an imminent threat to Mhadei’s water flow.
Sakhardande hinted at the possibility of another wave of protests to safeguard Mhadei, reflecting the determination of Goans to defend their natural heritage.
Expressing dismay at the government’s disregard for environmental concerns and the proliferation of coal mining activities, Sakhardande called for the citizens to unite in protecting the Mhadei.
“Coal mining poses a huge threat to Goa’s ecological balance, making the preservation of Mhadei river all the more crucial,” he said.
