PANJIM: Karnataka has requested for permission to divert an additional 4 TMC of water, through an application filed before the Mhadei Tribunal Wednesday. This is in addition to the 7.56 TMC that it has already asked for in its original plea, as part of the Khalsa Bhadura Project. The application was submitted asking to amend the earlier submission.
The Tribunal that is also hearing Goa’s plea on the Virdhi dam made it very clear that all submissions should be made before December 2.
It gave Maharashtra four weeks time to file a reply on the Virdi Dam. The next hearing is on December 9. The tenure of the tribunal is three years.
Karnataka has completed work on the channel in the Khalsa Bhandura project, but has closed the vents on orders of the tribunal.
On the other hand, the Maharashtra government’s Virdhi Dam work is almost complete. On March 3, interim directions were issued to Karnataka by the tribunal not to utilize or divert the Mhadei water till the dispute is finally adjudicated.
A team of officials, including Goa’s water resources department’s chief engineer, Sandeep Nadkarni, and advocates are in New Delhi to attend the hearing.
