KTC suspends seven bus drivers found drinking on the job

Passengers and citizens have been complaining about drunk drivers; KTC will continue to conduct surprise checks to uphold safety and compliance standards

MARGAO: The Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) has recently suspended seven drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol. These drivers were found to be intoxicated while on duty, posing a risk to the safety of their passengers and other road-users as well.

Ulhas Tuenkar, Chairman of KTC and Navelim MLA, addressed the issue, stating that stringent actions will continue to be taken to ensure compliance with safety standards. He noted that the decision followed numerous complaints from citizens and passengers about drivers being drunk while operating KTC buses.

“We have received several complaints from citizens and passengers of KTC buses regarding incidents where drivers were found to be drunk. After conducting inquiries, we have initiated action against those found intoxicated while on duty,” Tuenkar said. He highlighted the critical responsibility drivers have in ensuring the safety of the 40 to 50 passengers typically on board each bus.

Tuenkar further stressed the severity of accidents caused by negligence, particularly those involving intoxicated drivers. “Accidents resulting from negligence, especially those involving drunk drivers, are serious offences. Therefore, we have decided to take immediate action against such drivers to uphold discipline during their duties. KTC will not tolerate drivers operating under the influence of alcohol,” he warned.

Meanwhile, there is increasing demand for buses from educational institutions,” he said. However, Tuenkar assured that the government has sanctioned nearly 50 new buses, which will be operational within the next two months.
