MARGAO: The Kadamba Transport Corporation has taken over the maintenance of the Cuncolim bus stand from the Cuncolim Municipal Council.
The bus stand maintenance was handed over to the CMC around four years ago when then Cuncolim MLA and Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao had raised questions over the state of affairs of the newly-built bus stand. Since then, the CMC had been undertaking maintenance of the bus stand upon payment of a monthly maintenance fee of Rs 25,000 paid by
the KTC.
Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Desai confirmed that the bus stand maintenance has been taken over by the KTC from the civic body. “The civic body is no longer looking after the upkeep and maintenance of the bus stand from September 1. The KTC has written to the civic body stating its intentions of carrying out the maintenance on its own,” Desai said.
Incidentally, the CMC Chief claimed that the KTC has not paid the maintenance fees to the civic body amounting to Rs two lakh pertaining to a period of eight months. “We will soon write to the KTC Corporation to make immediate payments of the maintenance fees,” he said.
Replying to a question, he said the civic body had taken charge of the maintenance on grounds that the place wore a dirty look for want of cleanliness. “We were not only looking after the cleanliness, but also the security aspects of the bus stand,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Cuncolim Municipal Council has urged the Cuncolim police to keep a tab on a group of youth loitering at the bus stand
late in the night. At the police-public meet, the CMC Chairperson drew attention of the police over the presence of a group of youngsters during late hours at the bus stand and urged to take suitable measures.
