Labourer dies after falling into sewage chamber at Curti Housing Board colony

Third death at site during the past three years; authorities yet to wake up and act

PONDA: A 50-year-old labourer died after he accidentally fell into a huge sewage chamber at the Housing Board Colony at Curti, Ponda last evening. The deceased has been identified as Nazrul Husaain Shaikh, a native of Chand Nagar, Mumbai and was presently residing near the Hegdewar School at Curti Ponda. Doctors at the Ponda Sub District Hospital declared him brought dead.

Police suspect that JCB bucket must have hit him while he was working at the construction site on the sewage chamber and are probing to find out whether it is a case of negligence or accidental death.

Ponda PI Tushar Lotlikar said that they are conducting an inquiry into matter but have as of now the police have registered it as a case of unnatural death. The body has been sent to the GMC for postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.

It may be recalled that last year, a 22-year-old worker died while working in a eight meter deep sewage chamber at Kapileshwarim Kavlem and a case of criminal negligence was registered against the contractor for failing to provide safety gear to employees.

Similarly, a 19-year-old passerby died of electrocution at the sewage site near PMC last year.
