PANJIM: Speaker Rajendra Arlekar urged budding writers to take inspiration from Lambert Mascarenhas’ writings to develop their English writing skills. He was speaking after inaugurating a two-day national seminar on Goan Writing “Celebrating Creativity, Commemorating Genius: Glimpses of Goan Writing in English and in English Translation” as a curtain raiser in honour of Lambert Mascarenhas’ 100th birthday organized by Institute Menezes Braganza in collaboration with Department of English, Goa University, Tuesday.
Dr Satish Shetye, Vice-Chancellor, Goa University presided while Prof Mabel Fernandes, Head, Department of English, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, was the keynote speaker.
Arlekar stressed on the need to translate Konkani literature into English to spread it all over the world. Dr Satish Shetye highlighted the importance of English and urged the student community to take inspiration from Mascarenhas and strive hard to develop their English to face challenges.
Prof Mabel Fernandes while reviewing the writings and literature of Mascarenhas, touched on issues such as Goan identity, Goa’s freedom struggle, etc. Dr K Budkuley explained the objective of the seminar.
The topics like Assessing ‘Freedom’ through the Thematic Parameters of Loss and Longing: Lambert Mascarenhas’ Sorrowing Lies My Land, Colonial ideology, colonized Psyche and Goan identity, Anti-colonial sentiments in Lambert Mascarenhas’ novel, Historical Context of Heartbreak Passage, Encountering Goan writing in English: Perils, pitfalls and potential, Thinking Goa Post-colonially: A small place of different worlds, Goan writing from Author’s Perspective, Konkani Fiction in English Translation: an eco-critical view, Goa in Translation: A Linguistic Analysis of three Goa novels and others will be deliberated during the seminar.
