Strange it may seem, but it’s true that while it is a little over two years since Fomento commissioned its waste treatment plant at Sonsodo; the landfill site is yet to fall in place.
Interestingly, while all work on the landfill site had come to a complete halt over a year ago after local residents and activists questioned the hill cutting and transportation of the mud, it was only recently that the Town and Country Planning Department gave its approval for Fomento to go ahead with the cutting activity after obtaining the drawings.
Sources, however, said that it would take some months before the landfill site becomes a reality.
Says Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat, “Only recently, we have received the permission for hill cutting. Work on the hill cutting will resume after we receive the drawings from the TCP. If we complete the work on hill cutting before the monsoons, I can say with confidence that we can take up work on the landfill site during the monsoons.”
In the absence of a landfill site, the rejects from the waste treatment plant find their way into the existing dump yard, aggravating the waste disposal problem.
