Landowner booked for storing sand at Canacona

CANACONA: The Canacona police based on a complaint by the Mining Director filed a case against a land owner who had stored 21 cubic metres of sand worth around Rs 27,000.

There are multiple complaints filed against illegal sand mining in creeks of Dabhel, Amone, Patgal and Adhfond which are close to the Talpona River. The locals have alleged that the reason behind large scale sand mining in the area is due to the political clout the violators of the law enjoy.

“If the sand mining in traditional manner is permitted in Talpona and Galgibaga Rivers, it will help the constructions coming up in the Canacona Taluka,” said local Shanu Velip from Shristhal.

Locals cited restricted sand transportation from Kali River in Karwar as the reason behind shortage of sand in the taluka. Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas is further investigating the case.
