Landry elected Cuncolim civic chief

MARGAO: Landry Mascarenhas was elected the new Chairperson of Cuncolim Municipal Council. Premdeep Desai was elected his deputy.

In the elections held on Tuesday, both Landry and Premdeep were elected unopposed after the presiding officer received their lone nomination papers for the two posts. After his election, Landry told the media that he would take up development works in the town with the help and cooperation of the Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik. The local MLA said he would pursue the implementation of the commercial project with the cooperation of the Cuncolim civic body so that all the government offices are brought under one roof and that the project generates revenue for the Municipality.
Davorlim sarpanch voted out
MARGAO:  The Sarpanch of Davorlim Herculano Niasso was voted out of office in a no confidence motion on Tuesday, while his deputy Magdalina Rocha survived the no trust motion against her.
At a special meeting held on Tuesday, the motion against Niasso was carried by 6-5 votes, while the motion against the deputy Sarpanch was defeated by 6-5 votes. Incidentally, panch member Hemant Kambli, who had signed the notice of no confidence motion against the deputy Sarpanch voted against the motion at the meeting.
After his ouster, Niasso told the media that the members had levelled false and baseless allegations against him that he was not taking the members into confidence. 
He said the Panchayat was controlled by the BJP-backed body, but now appears to be going in the hands of the Congress.
Ambelim gram sabha on July 20
PANJIM: Ambelim gram sabha will be held on July 20 at 9.30 am in the office of panchayat, Ambelim hall. Villagers are asked to forward their suggestion, if any, in writing on or before July 16 at panchayat office.
Agnelo elected attorney 
PANJIM: Agnelo Silveira has been elected as the attorney of the sub-committee of Fabrica da Igreja de Taleigao-Caranzalem for the period of the financial triennium (2013-2014 to 2015-2016), that is, from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2016 with effect from the date the governing council/administrative committee takes charge.  Diogo Rodrigues has been elected as the treasurer while. Rufus Rodrigues and Ms Brenda Menezes are the other elected members.
Damodar school students feted
PANJIM: Damodar Higher Secondary School of Science held its inauguration of the student’s council and felicitation of meritorious students, at Babu Naik Hall, Margao, recently. Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant was the chief guest. Mrs Mita Bandekar felicitated the students who performed extraordinarily at the Std XII Board exams 2014 and also the Std XI students who performed excellently in the Std X board exams 2014. Babaji Sawant declared the prizes winners for the various competitions.
Warning for vessels, boats 
PANJIM: The Captain of Ports has notified that M/s Pramitee Engineering and Surveys Pvt Ltd, Navi Mumbai, has been awarded the work for conducting the hydrographic surveys across Mandovi River on the Wednesday the July 16, at the vicinity of the existing Mandovi Bridges. During the surveys, a boat named Margarida will be deployed. Therefore, all owners/masters of the barges, passengers launchers, ferry boats, tindels of fishing trawlers and operators of the mechanized and non-mechanized crafts, including the tourist boats, cruise boats, etc. plying in river Mandovi are cautioned to keep a sharp lookout, go slow and if necessary stop at safe distance so as not to cause any hindrance during the hydrographic Survey.
Woman jumps off Zuari bridge 
CORTALIM: A woman along with a child is believed to have jumped off the Zuari Bridge at Cortalim on Tuesday evening. 
According to Verna PI Vishwesh Karpe, a passenger travelling in a KTC bus called 100 and informed the police that he had seen a woman along with a child jumping off the Zuari Bridge. “After getting the information, we conducted a search in the area and found a child’s raincoat near the bridge, which gives some credence to the suicide,” Karpe told Herald. When asked about the identity of the victims, Karpe said the police are investigating and will be able to furnish the details after the bodies are traced. The Agassaim Marine Police conducted a search operation, but could not trace the bodies.
Woman crushed to death under truck 
PONDA: A woman from Vaze-Shiroda was crushed to death under a truck at Borim on Tuesday. The truck driver has been arrested in this connection.
According to police sources, Manjula Naik had asked her brother-in-law to drop her on his two-wheeler to the Borim church bus stop near the Borim Bridge on Tuesday morning. Manjula used to board a bus to proceed to the Verna Industrial Estate, where she was employed. 
Police sources informed that the brother-in law, who is working in a hotel at Colva, was negotiating potholes on the road near the bus stop, when the truck dashed his motorcycle. Police further informed that Naik fell on the road and the truck, which was proceeding towards Margao, crushed Manjula. Police arrested truck driver, Ravi Basappa Kalasi (22).
House break-in at Morjim 
PERNEM: Two gold rings, two cameras, four wrist watches and cash worth about Rs 1.20 lakh were stolen from a house at Temwada-Morjim. 
According to Pernem Police, Alberto Paulo of Temwada-Morjim complained that between 8.30 pm on July 12 and 9.30 pm on July 13, some persons entered his house by breaking the lock on the main door and decamped with two cameras, four wrist watches, two gold rings, ATM card and cash of Rs 25,000, all worth about Rs 1.20 lakh. ASI S Naik is investigating the case.
Woman’s modesty outraged 
BICHOLIM: A woman has accused a resident of Sanquelim of outraging her modesty. According to Bicholim Police, the victim woman complained that between June 13 and July 8, the accused went to her residence and damaged plants, abused her, assaulted her with slaps on her face and outraged her modesty by touching her body. The complainant further stated that the accused also threatened her with dire consequence and harassed her by making continuous phone calls. PSI Y R Gawas is investigating the case.
Chennai native accused of stealing 
PONDA: A resident of Agapur-Ponda has accused a native of Chennai of stealing cash of Rs 2 lakh from his vehicle at Kapileshwari-Ponda on Monday. According to Ponda police, Vinayak Upadhya complained that between 1.10 pm and 1.30 pm, the accused stole cash of Rs 2 lakh from his vehicle. PSI Satish Gawde is investigating the case.
Cheating plaint filed 
CURCHOREM: A resident of Mirabag-Curchorem has accused two persons from Toremol-Curchorem of cheating him to the tune of Rs 2.82 lakh. According to Curchorem police, Sanjay Naik complained that the two accused persons, owners of car (GA-06-D-3366), induced him to purchase the car for Rs 2.82 lakh. The complainant further stated that the accused failed to transfer the ownership of the car, thereby committing breach of trust and cheated him. 
The accused also took away the car, which was in his possession, without his knowledge and permission from an open place at Toremol-Curchorem. Naik further stated that he had kept one mobile phone, two DDs, counter slip of Rs 5,000 of the DDs and RC book, which were stolen. Police is investigating 
the case.
