MARGAO: As a result of incessant rains, Dicarpale witnessed a landslide near the military camp leading to a blockade of the Margao-Quepem State highway and obstructing traffic movement.
Locals informed that the hillock is prone to landslides and a few years ago in a major incident a landslide had been reported at the same place wherein many had lost their lives.
On Monday, after complaints from locals, authorities made a point to clear the road immediately.
According to the available information, officials from the Salcete Mamlatdar’s office inspected the spot and took stock of the situation. A team comprising of traffic police and staff from Joint Mamlatdar’s office cleared the road by engaging the labour force.
A local, Peter Colaso informed that there are possibilities of landslides from the hillock and road blockade due to heavy rains. He urged the concerned authorities to take precautionary measures.
It is pertinent to note that a few years ago a major incident of landslide had been reported at the hillock wherein many have lost their lives.
Colaso said “The incident that took away lives of a few labourers is still not forgotten by the people. Shockingly, we notice that many are still residing on the risky part of the hill by erecting huts. Even few are seen engaged in business activities by putting up temporary shed.”
Locals have demanded that the authorities take action or ask those residing on the hill to move to a safe side, before any untoward incident occurs.
