Landslides: One month on, NH 66 at Naibag still blocked with boulders, soil

Inter-state truck drivers compelled to use the old narrow highway, which leads to congestion; find it tough to negotiate the road

PANJIM: Over one month has passed since three landslides occurred along the National Highway 66 at Naibag-Poroscodem, in Pernem, but the site has remained blocked with boulders and soil.

It may be recalled that the highway witnessed three landslides, a boulder fell in front of a car, and another bounced inches above the car. The car occupants had a miraculous escape and since then the highway has been blocked.

The landslides caused massive losses to interstate truck drivers, who have been compelled to use the old narrow highway, which results in congestion. The container trucks find it very tough to negotiate the road as danger of accidents lurks.

Social activist Xencor Polji who visited the spot, said, “Due to the shoddy works by MVR Construction, the landslide occurred and the wall built by MVR collapsed. Because of this, they have diverted the heavy vehicles towards the old highway. I wish to tell the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari that for the past about one-and-half months, no work of clearing the highway has started.”

“You have given thousands of crores to the Goa government, have you questioned where this money has gone? They have done cheap quality development. Even the link road to Mopa airport, which you inaugurated, was flooded with knee deep water. Vehicles could not pass. So you can think what type of development this government has done,” Polji added.
