Lankan held with drugs worth Rs 4.62 lakh

PANJIM: The Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) sleuths arrested a Sri Lankan national for allegedly peddling drugs in the northern coastal belt late Tuesday night. The 33-year-old identified as Charaka Nishad was found with 46.260 gms of suspected Ecstasy tablets, valued at Rs 4.62 lakh in international market. The drugs were found concealed in scooter, used by him. 

“We had a tip-off based on which we laid a trap. When he arrived at the location, we caught him red-handed with the consignment. His interrogation will reveal about his clients, source of drugs and if more people are involved in the racket,” an officer said. 

An estimated Rs 6.39 crore approx seizure of various types of drugs was recorded last calendar year. 

Out of 244 arrests of alleged drug peddlers, 109 were non-Goans, 75 Goans and 60 foreign nationals. Whereas, 2020 year till last month recorded seizure of drugs worth Rs 3.83 crore approximately and around 70 persons – 32 non-Goans, 22 Goans and 16 foreigners were booked for allegedly peddling drugs.
