Lawyers poke holes in CB probe into Bismarque death

PANJIM: The team of criminal lawyers closely monitoring the Crime Branch (CB) inquiry into the mysterious death of Fr Bismarque Dias said that CB wanted the case out of its hands and so closed the inquiry without inquiring into some of the issues thoroughly.

Advocates Jose Peter D’Souza and Caroline Collasso, who have acted as legal advisors to Bismarque’s family, concluded in a report that the inquiry right from the initial stage was done in a haphazard manner so as to kill the case. They also stated that the police, instead of collecting evidence, had tried to destroy it.
They said that Old Goa Police that were initially investigating the case had put down a false and forged panchanama and the same was taken into consideration by CB when they took over investigations.
“The clothes from the site of the incident were taken home by the assistant parish priest of St Estevam and it was collected by Old Goa Police from the residence of Fr Bismarque not from the site as is seen in the panchanama report,” one of the lawyers from team informed Herald.
Their report also stated that a lady from St Estevam, who is politically well connected, has been brought for interrogation by CB but within no time she left saying she needs a lawyer with her while being questioned. However, till today the lady has not been questioned, neither individually nor with the lawyer, the report claims.
The lawyers also raised questions on the investigation of Bismarque’s vest. They stated he always wore one and sought to know what happened to it and how the vest reached the spot where it was found and who took it.
Their report also questions why CB has not questioned the five boys who had seen Bismarque at 11:30 pm on November 5 which goes completely against the theory of the two boys who had accompanied him on that fateful night. Bismarque’s body is still preserved at the GMC morgue, as the family has been demanding justice. It’s been four months since his body was found in mysterious circumstances in River Mandovi at St Estevam on November 7 after he went missing on November 5.
