PANJIM: Proceedings in all courts across the State, including the High Court, were affected Monday as most advocates stayed away from the courts protesting the killing of an advocate by a cop in the Allahabad district court premises. In many cases litigants appeared in their own cases.
All Labour Court and Industrial Tribunal, lawyers and practitioners (TU leaders who are not advocates but entitled to practice) abstained from all court work on Monday.
Presiding Officers B K Thaly and S Narulkar co-operated.
The Labour Law Practitioners Association held a small meeting in the Bar Room and supported the Bar Council of India resolution where they condemned the killing of the advocate by a police official in Allahabad district court premises.
A minute’s silence was observed to pay homage to the murdered advocate. Short speeches were made by Adv Madhav Bandodkar and Adv Raju Mangueshkar, President and Secretary of the Association respectively, highlighting importance of rule of law (through arguments, not guns) and the Professional Privileges of Advocates when they represent their clients (even if the client is in conflict with the law).
The Mapusa advocates room too wore a deserted look. The Panjim bar room too was closed as advocates stayed away from work.
