Leader of Opposition criticises decision of six-day Assembly session

Yuri Alemao says bulletin on House session ‘lacks substance’, should not be taken seriously

MARGAO: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Tuesday stated that a bulletin issued by the Secretary of Goa Legislative Assembly announcing six working days for the sixth session of the eighth Goa Legislative Assembly once again proves that the announcements of the government are without any substance and not to be taken seriously.

He also charged that BAC stands for Bhaajap Advisory Committee and not Business Advisory Committee.

Releasing a video of the Chief Minister briefing the media after the Cabinet Meeting on December 21, 2023 announcing that the schedule of the February assembly session will be decided by the BAC, LoP slammed the Chief Minister for making baseless statements without proper application of mind and doing homework.

He further said that it is now certain that the first six months of 2024 will have only six days of business in the Goa Legislative Assembly as the next session is expected only in July – August 2024. This is deliberately done because the BJP government is rattled to face the Opposition.

It is loud and clear that the BJP government headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has completely failed in fulfilling its own commitments. The government could implement hardly 34 percent of the budget announcements of 2022-23. This year the performance will be worse as the government could initiate the process of only 10.51 percent of the budget announcements of 2023-24. This data is revealed by the Department of Planning, Statistics & Evaluation, Yuri pointed out.

He informed that he will convene the meeting of the Congress Legislature Party later this week followed by the meeting of the Opposition MLAs to discuss the strategy for the upcoming session. “We will take up the issues pertaining to giving additional time to the Opposition MLAs during various debates and discussions, increasing the number of calling attention and giving maximum opportunities to the opposition,” Yuri said.

He also said that they will also demand strict action against the officials who give incomplete, incorrect and misleading replies to the Legislative Assembly Questions.
